N.J. professor is first to receive Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver Civil Rights and Social Justice Award

Patricia Reid-Merritt, a professor of African Studies and Social Work at Stockton University, received the first Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver Civil Rights and Social Justice Award at the 50th annual NAACP of Atlantic City Freedom Gala on April 27.

“This award recognizes someone who embodies the life and legacy of the recently passed Lt. Governor,” a press release by Hard Rock Hotel & Casino said.

The lieutenant governor passed in August 2023.

“I feel so honored to receive this award,” Reid-Merritt said. “The NAACP is to be congratulated on 50 years of service to the community, always a leader in the fight for civil rights and social justice.

“And what better way to honor the late Lt. Governor who was also a fierce advocate in the ongoing fight for the protection of civil rights and the quest for a more socially just society.”
