A new “state-of-the-art” pickleball complex has been built at East New Street Park in Glassboro, according to a borough press release.

The new complex will feature nine courts and was funded through a New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Local Recreation Improvement Grant. There are plans to implement a reservation system for the courts and potentially to organize programs and leagues, according to the news release. At present, the courts operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The borough of Glassboro is thrilled to be bringing first-class pickleball courts to our New Street Park, and further improving the quality of life for our residents,” Glassboro Mayor John E. Wallace III said. “The addition of this new recreational amenity will provide countless hours of enjoyment for all.”

The complex was built on the site of a former street hockey rink that was prone to vandalism.

“The introduction of the new pickleball courts at Glassboro’s New Street Park will allow us to offer an additional recreational opportunity to our community,” said Elena Power, director of Parks and Recreation. “Our mission as Parks and Recreation and Glassboro as a whole is to ensure that all residents have access to recreational opportunities, including outdoor activities like pickleball.”

Glassboro Councilmember Andrew Halter said “Glassboro is known for the quality and beauty of our parks and fields. The grant funding is playing a pivotal role in restoring a vital recreational space for the community.”
