Morristown National Historical Park to hold reading of Declaration of Independence on July 4

The Morristown National Historical Park is hosting a 4th of July celebration at Washington’s Headquarters Grounds at Morristown National Park beginning at noon on Independence Day, according to the organization’s website.

The event will include a reading of the declaration by members of The Washington Association of New Jersey.

After the reading, there will be a mock musket salute known as a feu de joie – or fire of joy, according to a news release.

The event will feature a variety of activities, including the promotion of Junior Ranger Programs and interactive demonstrations by re-enactors from the 2nd New Jersey regiment. Visitors can join in singing soldier songs from the era, explore period-correct tents displaying what soldiers would have carried with them, and learn about the daily lives of soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Independence Day at Morristown National Historical Park with a range of engaging activities,” said Acting Chief of Interpretation and Education of Morristown National Historical Park Alexander Parody. “This event allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history of our nation’s fight for independence through a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence by one of our park rangers, reenactor demonstrations and interactive Junior Ranger Programs."

“Our hope is that attendees leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Declaration of Independence and sacrifices made during the Revolutionary War, while also enjoying a memorable and inspiring experience."

“We aim to create a family-friendly atmosphere that both educates and entertains, ensuring that the spirit of the Revolution is brought to life for all ages.”
